SB 682 Advances Following Key Fiscal Hearing
CASA’s co-sponsored legislation to ban PFAS in consumer products advanced to the Senate Floor after being passed off the Senate Appropriations Committee’s “suspense file” last Friday. As a condition of passage, the committee included several author’s amendments to streamline the proposed petition process for essential use determinations, but also included a “committee amendment” to qualify what types of PFAS would be subject to the bill’s ban provisions. The committee amendment states that the 2035 and 2040 deadlines to ban PFAS applies to: “a product that contains intentionally added PFAS that is water soluble, may decompose into PFAS that is water soluble, or may release PFAS that is water soluble.” We are reviewing this new provision with our technical experts to analyze the policy implications and impact on the intended source control benefits for the wastewater sector.
The bill is now on the Senate Floor and must be passed by Friday, June 6th, which is the final “House of Origin” deadline for all bills to be passed to the second house. Stay tuned for a call to action very soon encouraging members to engage with their local Senators and urge them to move the bill forward.
