Senator Skinner Announces Legislation to Ban Toxic “Forever Chemicals”
On Wednesday February 21st Senator Nancy Skinner announced the introduction of SB 903, which would prevent the sale and use of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) unless the use of the PFAS in the product is necessary and there is not a safer alternative available.  CASA is co-sponsoring this legislation with Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (BCPP), Clean Water Action (CWA) and Environmental Working Group (EWG).

As amended, the bill would ban the sale of products containing PFAS by 2030, and would also set up a process at the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) that would allow manufacturers to petition for the Department to determine whether the presence of PFAS in their product is a currently unavoidable use.

SB 903 is awaiting a referral to the relevant policy committees where it will be heard and considered later this Spring. Stay tuned for additional outreach from CASA requesting letters of support from CASA member agencies and allies.
