Meet the CASA Board: Sandeep Karkal, Director
Sandeep Karkal serves as General Manager-Chief Engineer for the Novato Sanitary District (NSD), which provides wastewater collection, treatment and disposal, recycled water production, and franchised solid waste services in northern Marin County.  Prior to joining NSD in 2004, he worked for over 17 years in the public and private sectors, including at two well-regarded consulting engineering firms. Sandeep has Bachelors and Master’s Degrees in Civil/Environmental Engineering, and over 35 years in the water/wastewater industry. He is a registered Civil Engineer in California and Arizona and holds high grade water/wastewater operator certifications in both states. In addition to the CASA Board of Directors, Sandeep currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) and is the President of the Board of Directors of the California Sanitation Risk Management Authority (CSRMA).

What inspired you to join the CASA board?
Having seen and experienced the results of the advocacy efforts of prior CASA staff and Boards, I wanted to be a part of those efforts moving forward. Additionally, having worked in the clean water industry for more than 35 years in a variety of technical, administrative, and managerial roles, joining the CASA Board seemed like a logical next step, an opportunity to contribute positively to the organization’s future efforts while being in the company of smart, like-minded individuals.

What do you find most rewarding about serving on the CASA board?
Several aspects come to mind, not the least of which is the opportunity to advance the interests of California’s clean water agencies, help lead the way in water quality and public health protection, and support environmental resiliency. I also find it very satisfying to work with an outstanding Board and staff, all of whom are deeply dedicated to the clean water industry. The fact that each of them is an exceptional individual, both professionally and personally, makes the experience all the more rewarding.
